Agartala: The Tripura State Secretariat of the CPI(M) fired back at the BJP-led government on Sunday, August 23. They slammed the state for slashing the rice quota at local ration shops. Party leaders branded the decision as "inhuman" and demanded officials scrap it immediately.
Officials allegedly capped the ration supply at 20 kg per household. This limit ignores family size if there are more than four members. Before this, citizens expected 5 kg of rice per person regardless of the total headcount. The party insists this move creates a heavy financial load for struggling families who rely on these shops for basic food.
CPI(M) leaders also flagged a sharp spike in living costs over the last three months. Rice prices surged by Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per quintal. Masur dal followed a similar trend, jumping by over Rs 1,000 per quintal. Sugar prices climbed at that same rate. Mustard oil now costs Rs 25 to Rs 30 more per litre, and spice costs keep rising.
The opposition party accused both the Central and state governments of incompetence. They claim these administrations failed to curb inflation effectively. Now, the CPI(M) is calling for public protests to force the government to act. They want the rice quota restored and a firm grip put on the soaring prices of essential goods.
