Agartala: Nine CPI(M) legislators led by opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury met Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu to push for a judicial inquiry into the unnatural death of former DGP Anurag Dhankar. The party rejects the government-appointed Special Investigation Team led by West Tripura SP Namit Pathak. They want a sitting High Court judge to run the show.
Dhankar died while on duty at the Tripura Police Headquarters. The incident left many questions unanswered. Party leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, called the late officer honest and courageous. They argue the district police handling the case creates unnecessary suspicion. "We do not have confidence in the police investigation," said Chaudhury.
The memorandum submitted to the Governor asks for a deep dive into events before the death and all physical or forensic evidence. This includes CCTV footage, witness statements, and official records. The delegation included Shyamal Chakraborty, Nirmal Biswas, Md Islam Uddin, Dipankar Sen, Ashoke Mitra, Ramu Das, Shailendra Chandra Nath, and Sudip Sarker.
Beyond the death of the police chief, the CPI(M) took aim at the state government. Chaudhury pointed to rising electricity costs, joblessness, and a surge in political violence. He alleged that attackers broke the bones of leader Sunirmal Das in a recent assault. Offices in Belonia and Kamalpur also faced targeting. Meanwhile, infrastructure projects on national highways remain stalled, with new orders threatening two to three years of further delays.
The party has run out of patience. They announced a statewide Jail Bharo agitation for August 10 across all subdivisions. A mass rally is also slated for September at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala. The government remains silent on the allegations.
