Agartala: Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury admitted Thursday that his decision to call the South Tripura Superintendent of Police an "idiot" was wrong. The CPI(M) leader made the remark during a tense standoff on July 15 near Chottakhola. Chaudhury claimed he acted in a moment of intense frustration after his calls to the official went unanswered.

"I was very upset in that situation. The SP was not answering my calls and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer was asking us to return. In anger I called the SP an 'idiot'. It was not right and I admit that," Chaudhury stated during a press conference in Sabroom. The All India Services Association previously demanded an unconditional public apology for the insult.

The confrontation occurred during an attempt to hold a memorial for Badal Shil, a party worker killed on August 12, 2024, following his nomination for the Zilla Parishad elections. Chaudhury alleged the event had prior administrative permission. He claimed police intercepted his convoy four kilometers from the site, while BJP supporters allegedly vandalized three vehicles and injured several CPI(M) workers in the presence of law enforcement.

Chaudhury has since sent a formal letter to Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. He seeks an inquiry into the conduct of the South Tripura SP, citing security failures and obstruction of a lawful assembly. The Opposition leader detailed how he was stopped repeatedly, including once by the Additional SP and a Deputy Collector near Chottakhola market. He publicly challenged Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to explain the administration's failure to protect the event, labeling the state of affairs as "hooliganism" rather than democracy. While criticizing the government, he welcomed the Chief Minister's rapid response to the controversy.
