Agartala: The BJP, Tipra Motha, and IPFT will contest the upcoming Village Committee elections as a unified front. Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed the alliance on September 5 after returning from a 90-minute meeting in New Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Other attendees included Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma and BJP Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra.
Saha confirmed the coalition remains stable. “An important decision has been taken that BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT will contest the upcoming Village Committee elections together. The alliance will remain intact,” Saha told reporters at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. Both the BJP and Tipra Motha have formed dedicated teams to determine seat-sharing, while discussions also involved IPFT minister Shukla Charan Noatia.
Elections for 587 village committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled for September 28. These rural polls follow a 10-year hiatus, with vote counting set for October 5. A delegation from Tipra Motha will travel to Tripura soon to finalize the specific seat-sharing roadmap.
The meeting also addressed the 2024 Tripartite Accord. Saha stated that implementation of almost all agreement demands will begin next month, immediately following the election process. Sources indicated that land rights, tribal identity protections, and greater TTAADC powers were central to the talks. The government plans to execute the accord in two phases, with land rights documents potentially provided by September under Sixth Schedule provisions.
Saha emphasized that the state will ensure no community faces discrimination. He rejected claims that the administration is weak regarding a 72-hour strike by surrendered militants. The chief minister reiterated his commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of inclusive development for all residents of the state.
