Agartala: The BJP and Tipra Motha Party are holding high-stakes meetings in New Delhi to discuss a potential electoral alliance for the upcoming Tripura village committee elections. Elections for 587 committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council are set for September. This follows a nine-year delay caused by a Supreme Court battle.
Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma arrived in the capital on Saturday. He joins MLA Ranjit Debbarma and Minister Brishaketu Debbarma for the talks. Discussions with Union Home Ministry officials are scheduled for Sunday. The BJP’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, national president Nitin Nabin, and general secretary BL Santosh have been involved in the coordination.
Tipra Motha seeks action on a 2024 tripartite agreement. The party joined the ruling coalition specifically to ensure this deal is honored. Some party sources suggest they may also push for a reshuffle of the state Council of Ministers. Meanwhile, the BJP remains focused on the 2028 assembly elections to counter anti-incumbency risks.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed that talks are underway but remain unresolved. Speaking on the potential for a joint fight, Saha said, “It may happen.” He added, “Constructive discussions pertaining to ensuing VC polls of the TTAADC areas took place. At this point of time, I have nothing more to disclose.” Both sides have kept details private, deferring to central party leadership to manage the sensitive negotiations.
