Agartala: Senior leadership from the BJP and Tipra Motha arrived in New Delhi to repair their fracturing coalition. The meeting follows mounting friction since the two partners chose to run separate campaigns during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and state BJP president Abhishek Debroy flew to the capital for the talks. Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman leads the Tipra Motha delegation. Both sides aim to bury past animosity before the Village Committee elections arrive. They also have one eye on the 2028 Assembly polls.

The two parties have maintained a rocky alliance since 2023. They formally joined forces in government after signing a 2024 agreement regarding indigenous welfare. However, recent local elections sparked a bitter, high-voltage campaign that saw both sides trade sharp insults. Relations soured quickly. Workers clashed and offices burned.

Opposition leader and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury dismissed the public feud as political theater on August 6. He challenged the ruling parties to stop hiding their partnership. “In the morning, they attack each other's workers; in the evening, they sit together and have tea,” Chaudhury said. He argued that the groups should formalize their seat-sharing arrangements openly.

BJP sources claim the party's central leadership now prioritizes internal stability. Most officials across both organizations want a unified front. They fear lingering discord will jeopardize their standing in upcoming tribal council races. This Delhi summit will decide the immediate future of the ruling state government.
