Agartala: Tripura’s ruling coalition is heading for a showdown in the national capital. BJP and Tipra Motha leadership are converging on New Delhi to iron out deep-seated friction. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will likely chair talks on August 8 or 9. The meeting aims to settle an electoral strategy for the upcoming September Village Council elections.
These elections follow a nine-year delay triggered by a Supreme Court battle. The coalition has been rocky. While the parties joined forces in 2024, they splintered during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) contests. Political sniping between the two has become routine. CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury claims the parties are playing a double game. He says, "BJP and Tipra Motha have been together since 2023. Sometimes their alliance comes out in the open, while at other times they try to hide it."
Chaudhury urged both sides to drop the act. He accused them of burning offices and attacking workers by day while sharing tea by night. BJP leaders held a strategy session Thursday at their New Delhi headquarters. B.L. Santosh chaired the meeting. Attendees included Chief Minister Manik Saha, Abhishek Debroy, Biplab Kumar Deb, Ratan Lal Nath, and Pratima Bhoumik. They discussed booth-level organization and tribal outreach.
Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman is expected in Delhi Friday. Other party representatives include Ranjit Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma. Tipra Motha officials remain frustrated by the slow pace of the 2024 tripartite agreement. They joined the government on the premise of fulfilling that accord. Now, they want results. Whether they unite for the village polls or split again, both parties are already jockeying for position ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
