Agartala: TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma took aim at the Agartala Municipal Corporation on Monday. He blasted the civic body for its recent eviction drives. The AMC targeted poor street vendors in Nandanagar. Deb Barma visited the site and heard accounts from women who lost their only source of income.
These indigenous women sold vegetables to feed their families. Deb Barma questioned the selective nature of the enforcement. He noted that nearly 60 per cent of his own family land in Agartala sits under illegal occupation. The city has ignored these encroachments. "Why is action being taken only against the weak, street vendors and poor people?" he asked.
He demanded a more compassionate approach to urban regulation. Civic enforcement should not destroy the survival of vulnerable communities. To help the victims, the TTAADC administration provided Rs 10,000 in compensation to each affected vendor.
Earlier that day, Deb Barma spoke at a party meeting at Manikya Court. He reinforced his commitment to protecting the rights of indigenous people. His intervention puts heavy pressure on the AMC to explain its enforcement strategy. The move keeps the focus on fairness and equality in local governance.
