Agartala: The BJP and Tipra Motha are teaming up. Both parties will fight the upcoming Urban Local Body elections in Tripura under the National Democratic Alliance banner. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed the agreement on November 1 following a meeting at the State Guest House.
Nath chaired the session alongside BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma. Representing Tipra Motha were MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, and MDC Purna Chandra Jamatia. The parties aim to mirror their united front from the earlier TTAADC Village Committee elections. “An important decision has been taken that we will fight the elections unitedly. We will contest the upcoming Urban Local Body elections under the NDA alliance,” Nath said.
The agreement covers the Agartala Municipal Corporation, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats ahead of the November 27 polls. Despite the pact, the parties have not yet settled on seat sharing. Tipra Motha submitted proposals for their share of seats, specifically focusing on regions where they hold strong organizational ground. Ranjit Debbarma confirmed the party is ready for the electoral challenge.
BJP leadership will deliberate on these proposals during a working committee meeting. A final decision on candidate distribution is expected by the night of October 31. Additionally, the parties discussed coordinating nomination filings to ensure candidates submit paperwork on the same day. BJP state president Abhishek Debroy stated the party will prioritize young candidates capable of taking on leadership roles. Final terms of cooperation remain pending until the conclusion of internal BJP discussions.
