Shillong: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) grabbed 1,557 seats unopposed in the upcoming Tripura Village Committee elections. This accounts for roughly 34 percent of the 4,597 total seats. The Tripura State Election Commission confirmed the win on Saturday. The ruling BJP secured 81 seats uncontested. Votes will be cast in 2,954 seats across 44 blocks on September 28.
Competition remains fierce. A total of 9,820 candidates are vying for office. TMP leads the field with 4,279 candidates. The CPI(M) follows with 2,151, while the BJP fields 1,853. Congress, the IPFT, and Independents make up the rest. This marks the first village election in ten years.
Tensions are boiling over. Violence has broken out across eight districts. IPFT Minister Sukla Charan Noatia reported a physical assault on party leader Swapan Debbarma. Noatia said, "Debbarma was targeted and beaten up by supporters of the TMP while he was travelling to Khowai village." He demanded an immediate end to the chaos to preserve the integrity of the ruling alliance.
The opposition is also feeling the heat. Both CPI(M) and Congress claim their members were blocked from filing nomination papers. They accuse TMP and BJP workers of systemic intimidation. Left Front convener Manik Dey expressed frustration with the election commission. He stated the panel has failed to act despite repeated pleas for help.
