Agartala: Violence erupted Saturday at Khowai Chowmuhani in the Hezamara block. A Tipra Motha candidate and his supporters tangled with a group of surrendered militants during a road blockade. The Motha group was heading home after filing nominations for Village Committee polls when they hit the roadblock. Someone told them to take an alternative route on foot. Words turned into a brawl.
Multiple people suffered injuries. Medics rushed the hurt to a local hospital for treatment. Tipra Motha leaders stated that several people fled the area in panic during the clash. Police eventually moved in to restore order and deployed officers to keep the peace. Alindra Debbarma led the blockade and required a personal guard escort to get out of the area safely.
Accounts of the trigger remain split. Tipra Motha officials claimed their group was targeted while trying to pass. Police sources provided a different version of events, stating that "Tipra Motha supporters launched the attack after the returnees' group threw obscene languages to party's women supporters, who were inside the vehicles." Several surrendered militants also sustained injuries. Investigators are now working to piece together the events and identify those responsible.
