Shillong: Meghalaya celebrated its 65th Teachers’ Day on Saturday. State officials urged educators to push beyond marks and certificates. They want a focus on student confidence and skill development. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui spoke in Jowai. He pushed for adaptation in a changing educational climate. Rymbui told teachers that education must focus on building competitiveness and individual potential. He also confirmed that the compliance deadline for in-service teachers to clear the Teachers Eligibility Test is now 2028.
Local districts handed out honors. Phrangki Pran and Kissme Sungoh took home District Awards in West Jaintia Hills. Lamisakani Dkhar received the Best Guide Captain award. In East Jaintia Hills, Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar addressed the Khliehriat assembly. He called teachers second parents and lifelong mentors. Sumant Kumar, Nazariness Nongtdu, and Respilda Phawa earned recognition for their service.
Community groups joined the festivities. The organisation Sarot I Man held a blood donation camp at Jowai Civil Hospital. Member Aziz War noted their commitment to the cause. Aziz War stated, "Blood donation is one of the organisation’s foremost activities and is not merely a temporary enthusiasm among its members, as some may claim." Dr. Khyriem thanked the group for their consistency.
Shillong-based group SPARK marked the day by celebrating its 12th anniversary. They hosted over 300 children. The attendees included street children, rag pickers, and former child laborers. These children performed songs and skits to thank their instructors. Organizers also honored parents as the primary teachers for these disadvantaged students. The event concluded with a field trip for the teaching staff.
