Guwahati: A 21-year-old woman and her nine-year-old nephew drowned in the Jiri River in Assam's Cachar district on October 22. The tragedy unfolded between 3 pm and 4 pm in the Baghkhal Forest Village area of Jirighat. Durga Puja festivities turned to mourning. The victims were identified as Gautami Roy and Surajit Namasudra.

Surajit slipped into the river while the pair bathed near their home. Gautami jumped in to save him. The current proved too strong. A relative raised the alarm, but the water pulled them both under. Local residents launched a frantic search and recovered the bodies from separate locations.

Emergency efforts failed. Surajit died at the Jirighat Primary Health Centre. Gautami passed away at a private hospital in Pailapool. Police noted, "The incident occurred between 3 pm and 4 pm in the Baghkhal Forest Village area under Jirighat."

Gautami was married to Ashok Namasudra. Surajit was the son of Sujan Namasudra. Authorities sent the bodies to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem exams.
