Agartala: Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury admitted he was wrong to call South Tripura Superintendent of Police Mourya Krishna an idiot. He issued the regret on Thursday after the All India Services Association of Tripura demanded an apology. The association, representing IAS, IPS, and IFS officers, slammed the comment as disrespectful. They argued that personal attacks on officers performing their duties erode public trust and damage morale.

The controversy ignited Wednesday at Chottakhola in Belonia. Chaudhury led a CPI(M) procession to honor late party leader Badal Chandra Shil, who died in 2024 following an assault. Police had granted permission for the rally but blocked the route midway. Officers cited potential violence after local villagers, including many women, gathered to protest. These villagers claimed seven individuals were falsely implicated in Shil's murder case, though high court interventions had returned those suspects to judicial custody.

During the standoff, Chaudhury lashed out at police. He claimed the SP ignored three phone calls during the incident. Additional Superintendent of Police Suman Majumder immediately confronted the politician. He told Chaudhury his behavior was unbecoming of a senior representative. Former MLA Sudhan Das joined the argument, and supporters shouted at officers.

Chaudhury claimed he felt abandoned by the administration. He alleged that vehicles carrying his party workers were vandalized while police and an executive magistrate watched. He stated, "I was angry after the attack on our workers in the presence of police personnel and an executive magistrate. On the spur of the moment, I described the SP as an idiot. I should not have uttered that word."

The CPI(M) leader also criticized the government for the security breakdown. He questioned the Chief Minister on whether BJP supporters played a role in Shil's death. Chaudhury maintained the party would continue its political campaigns despite the hostility. He noted he had previously alerted Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar about potential trouble. He further clarified that he supports state development projects like the Maitri Bridge, even while challenging the administration on law and order failures.
