Agartala: The Tripura CPI(M) is turning up the heat. On Saturday, party leaders announced a Jail Bharo protest for August 10 to demand a high-level inquiry into the death of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. State secretary Jitendra Chaudhury says the party lacks faith in the current police investigation. He intends to ask Governor N Indrasena Reddy to authorize a probe led by a sitting High Court judge.
"We do not have confidence in the police investigation. We want a probe by a sitting High Court judge into the mysterious death of the DGP," Chaudhury said. The party also confirmed plans for a massive public gathering at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala this September, coinciding with the All India Krishak Sabha state conference.
Chaudhury painted a grim picture of state affairs. He claimed that crime and political violence are soaring under the BJP-led government. He cited specific attacks, including the assault of leader Sunirmal Das, who suffered fractures on his way to work Saturday. Other incidents include a targeted party office in Belonia and a strike against a CITU leader in Kamalpur.
The opposition also took aim at the state of public infrastructure and the economy. Chaudhury alleged that corruption has plagued national highway projects, with contractors abandoning work and causing two to three-year delays. He also slammed rising electricity tariffs and a lack of local jobs, which he claims is driving youth to leave the state. Finally, he backed student protesters fighting the NTA exam leaks, calling their movement a strike against widespread corruption in education.
