Agartala: Thousands of Left Front supporters flooded streets across Tripura on Monday, August 10, for a statewide Jail Bharo agitation. The demonstrators rallied at nearly 20 locations to push an 11-point charter of demands regarding employment, livelihood, and rights for marginalized communities. Protest groups included the CITU, AIKS, TKMU, and GMP.
In the capital city of Agartala, crowds marched with red flags to Post Office Chowmuhani. Scuffles erupted as protesters pushed through police barricades. Traffic ground to a halt. Authorities deployed heavy security and surveillance to contain the unrest. Simultaneously, in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, a massive procession marched from the CPI(M) subdivision office. Police detained many participants, holding them at the Vivekananda Shatabarshiki Bhavan, which served as a temporary jail.
Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury led the charge. They accused the BJP-led government of ignoring public distress while fostering division among communities. Chaudhury claimed the administration functions as a regime of loot. He pointed to rural despair, noting that the situation is so dire that even children being sold have come to light. He added, "When rulers turn despotic, citizens are compelled to take the path of civil disobedience."
Sarkar criticized the state for using police to obstruct the movement rather than engaging with the protesters. "The government could have appealed to the protesters not to proceed with the programme and assured them that their demands would be considered. Instead, the police are being used to create obstacles," he said. The opposition leaders charged the BJP with stripping away rights for jhum cultivators and failing to curb the rising cost of living. They vowed to continue the struggle until the administration addresses their demands.

Beyond the primary speakers, other high-level figures joined the front lines of the agitation, including veteran party members Manik Dey and Narayan Kar. Protesters marched under the banner of the slogan Save the Nation, Save the People as they pushed their agenda through the capital and into the rural sectors.
Addressing the crowd, Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury tied the timing of the protests to the historical significance of August, characterizing it as a month of revolution and struggle. He framed the movement as a direct challenge to the state's double engine government, warning that the campaign would intensify in the coming days if the administration maintains its current silence.

Police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb confirmed that security forces detained roughly 12,000 protesters across the state before releasing them later. While the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) reported that 6,000 of those arrests occurred in Agartala alone, authorities noted the day ended without major violence.
The SKM, which helped spearhead the mobilization, specified that their 11-point list includes a push for 200 days of annual MGNREGA work at a daily wage of 700 rupees. Organizers also demanded immediate action to slash fuel and food prices to ease the burden on household budgets.
Chaudhury warned that the movement aims to dismantle the current power structure if the administration continues to ignore these demands. He characterized the ongoing agitation as a necessary stand against what he described as eight and a half years of rampant corruption.
