Tripura BJP Chief Tells CPI(M) Leaders to Hide Faces Over Past Violence

Agartala: Tripura BJP President and MLA Abhishek Debroy attacked the CPI(M) on Sunday, July 26. He dismissed claims that democracy is dead in the state. He specifically targeted former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury. Debroy told the party brass they should "wear burqas to hide their shameless faces" because of past violence under their rule.

Debroy spoke at a memorial event for victims killed by CPI(M) workers in 2004. He claimed the Left Front fostered mass murders during its long tenure. He highlighted a specific case from a past Panchayat election where a winning opposition candidate was murdered. The perpetrators allegedly received state jobs in the Health, Agriculture, and Anganwadi departments.

The BJP chief also pointed to a 1996 attack in Kalyanpur, Khowai, which left 26 people dead. He questioned why the local CPI(M) MLA was spared. He argued the party had prior knowledge of that attack. Debroy claimed the BJP holds its own members accountable for crimes. He noted a recent case involving a booked Mandal president. He challenged the CPI(M) to name a single instance where they arrested one of their own leaders for a crime during their time in power.

Debroy cited 69 murders in the South District alone under the previous administration. He insisted the BJP has restored the rule of law. The CPI(M) continues to hold meetings and shout slogans against the government today. He asked how they could do that if democracy truly did not exist.
