Guwahati: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital has pulled off a medical first. Surgeons completed a liver transplant at the government facility, marking a major jump for public healthcare in the Northeast. The grueling surgery required 16 hours of work. It wrapped up on the night of October 23.

Dr. Senthil Kumar led the operation. Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal confirmed the milestone, noting that the hospital now ranks among a small group of Indian government institutions capable of handling such high-stakes procedures. "GMCH had joined a select group of government medical colleges in India equipped to perform complex procedures such as liver transplants," Singhal said.

The administration did not release specific details regarding the patient or the full surgical team. This achievement signals a shift for regional tertiary care services.
