Gauhati Medical College Performs Region's First Robotic Heart Surgeries

Guwahati: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital has completed the first robotic-assisted cardiac surgeries in the Northeast. The team performed Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting and mitral valve repair. This shift brings high-end technology to the public healthcare system. Surgeons now use three-dimensional imaging and robotic tools to operate through tiny incisions. Small cuts mean less pain and faster healing for patients.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the medical staff on X. He called the successful procedures a proud moment for the state. The state government remains focused on upgrading infrastructure at the facility. Officials want to turn the institution into a world-class medical center. Sarma said, "The next major objective, according to the announcement, is to work towards establishing a comprehensive cardiac transplant programme."

This move aims to bring elite surgical options to people across Assam and neighboring states. Leaders view this as a primary step in expanding specialized care. Future plans include further upgrades to the hospital's cardiac department.
