Aizawl: Aizawl Civil Hospital completed its first leadless pacemaker implantation this Monday. The surgery marks a shift in regional cardiac care. Dr. Loncy V. Lalzarliana and Dr. Isak Lallawmkima led the medical team. They operated under the guidance of Dr. Uday Shankar Das from Apollo Multispeciality Hospital in Kolkata.
The team used an Abbott AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker for the 67-year-old pensioner. This device lasts between 18 and 21 years. Traditional models only last 9 to 11 years. The procedure took place under the Mizo Universal Health Care Scheme.
This method differs from standard surgery. It does not require an incision for a pocket. It also avoids placing leads through blood vessels. Surgeons instead use a catheter via the femoral vein to reach the heart directly. Health Minister Lalrinpuii confirmed the success of the operation on Tuesday.
The hospital previously installed a cardiac catheterisation laboratory in 2025. This latest procedure keeps patients from traveling outside the state for heart care. Lalrinpuii stated, "The milestone is expected to strengthen the cardiac-care capabilities of Civil Hospital Aizawl and marks a significant step towards providing advanced heart treatment within Mizoram."

Medical staff discharged the patient on Tuesday. While the hospital has performed conventional pacemaker surgeries in the past, this marks the first time the state has utilized the leadless method.
