Aizawl: Zoram Medical College and Hospital in Aizawl successfully completed its first open-heart surgery on August 20. The patient, a 69-year-old man, suffered a heart attack six months prior. Doctors diagnosed him with Triple Vessel Disease, a severe condition featuring blockages in three major coronary arteries. The operation was a major medical milestone for the state.

Resident cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mary Hmingthantluangi led the team. She worked alongside visiting specialist Dr. Intekhab Alam from Guwahati's Apollo Excel Hospital. The surgery took six and a half hours to finish. It worked. The team used a heart-lung machine to keep the patient alive while they operated on his heart.

Surgeons restored blood flow by bypassing the blocked arteries. They used a saphenous vein from the patient's leg and the left internal mammary artery from his chest. Cardiologist Dr. Lalthafala joined the anaesthesiology team to monitor the patient during the procedure. After the operation, staff moved the patient to the Intensive Care Unit for monitoring.

Medical staff showed high levels of skill. Dr. Intekhab Alam praised the ZMC&H surgical, nursing and anaesthesiology teams for their thorough preparation and professionalism. Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii and the patient's family also thanked the medical team for this life-saving achievement.
