Helen Dawngliani Appointed Judge of Gauhati High Court

Aizawl: The Supreme Court Collegium cleared Helen Dawngliani to serve as a judge on the Gauhati High Court. The decision came during a Tuesday meeting. Officials confirmed the appointment on August 19. Nchumbemo Mozhui also received approval for a judgeship on the same bench.

Dawngliani currently works as the District and Sessions Judge at the Aizawl District Court. She boasts a long career in the legal field. She joined the Mizoram Judicial Service on May 24, 2011, after earning her BA (Hons) and LLB degrees. She has moved through various roles, including stints as an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Aizawl and Lunglei. She also put in time as the Registrar of the Gauhati High Court.

From April 2021 through July 2024, she acted as Secretary to the Mizoram government in the Law and Judicial Department. She also gained experience as a Government Advocate-cum-Additional Public Prosecutor at the Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court.

This appointment marks a milestone. She will be the second Mizo woman to reach this rank. Justice Marli Vankung was the first. Vankung retired on March 3 of this year. As noted by officials, "Helen Dawngliani set to become second Mizo woman to serve as Gauhati High Court Judge."
