Aizawl: Mizoram government employees now face a harsh reality. Break the state's new fireworks law and you could land in jail for six months or pay a Rs 1 lakh fine. Home Minister K Sapdanga laid out the rules on November 6 at the Aizawl Press Club.
The Mizoram Regulation of Fireworks Act, 2026, hit the books in August and saw official notification in September. It governs how people use, keep, or sell fireworks. You need permission from your Deputy Commissioner to light or even hold fireworks now. Sapdanga confirmed that "the legislation was aimed at regulating fireworks-related activities and ensuring compliance through a clearly defined legal framework."
Regular citizens face lighter, though significant, consequences. Using or possessing explosives without a permit invites up to three months of prison time or a Rs 50,000 fine. If a child under 12 breaks these rules, their parents or guardians take the fall. Illegal sales are a different beast. Selling these items without a license triggers prosecution under the Explosives Act, 1884. That carries a potential two-year prison sentence along with a fine.
Police have real power here. All offenses under the new Act are cognisable and bailable. This allows officers to register cases immediately without waiting for a magistrate's green light.
