Aizawl: The Mizoram Directorate of School Education cracked down on filming students on campus. An October 26 circular orders schools to stop indiscriminate video and photo collection. Officials want to prevent the misuse of footage on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, and Threads. This move aims to curb content that could cause "embarrassment, humiliation or distress" to minors.
Rules now require verifiable consent from parents or guardians for children under 18. This aligns with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 and the 2025 Rules. Staff must stop repeatedly posting individual students online. They can only share footage of official programs or student achievements. Posting content that damages a school reputation or compromises personal dignity is strictly off-limits.
Violators face harsh legal consequences. The state will leverage the Information Technology Act of 2000 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012. Section 23 of the POCSO Act protects child identities. Furthermore, staff could face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023 for defamation or intimidation. Schools must now set written policies to limit student use of phones, tablets, and smartwatches. Students also need lessons on digital footprints and safe social media habits.
