Mizoram Establishes First Human Rights Commission

Aizawl: Mizoram set up its first State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, July 29. Governor Vijay Kumar Singh administered the oath to the three inaugural appointees at Raj Bhavan. Justice Marli Vankung now leads the body as chairperson. Two other members, Vanlalenmawia and K. Lal Nghinglova, also took their oaths.

Justice Vankung brings deep legal experience to the role. She served as a judge at the Gauhati High Court until her retirement in March 2026. Member Vanlalenmawia brings a background in the Mizoram Judicial Service, having finished his career as the Presiding Officer of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Aizawl. K. Lal Nghinglova, a retired IAS officer, rounds out the trio. He held high-ranking posts in Mizoram and Delhi before retiring in November 2016.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma watched the ceremony alongside Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama and Opposition Leader Lalchhandama Ralte. Various cabinet ministers and government officials were also present. The commission exists because of a public interest litigation from the Zofa Welfare Organisation. The Gauhati High Court ordered the state to act. The move creates a dedicated path for citizens to report abuses. Officials expect the commission to "strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in Mizoram" by providing an independent mechanism to investigate claims.
