Aizawl: The Union government appointed Mizoram Judicial Service officer Helen Dawngliani as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday, September 8. She follows in the footsteps of Justice Marli Vankung, who retired on March 3 as the first Mizo woman to hold the position. This appointment addresses long-standing concerns regarding the thin representation of Mizoram judicial officers in the higher courts.
The Supreme Court Collegium pushed for this move on August 18, naming Dawngliani alongside Nagaland advocate Nchumbemo Mozhui for the bench. Officials confirmed the formal notification this week. The path to the High Court took time. Dawngliani joined the Mizoram Judicial Service on May 24, 2011, and brings over 15 years of experience to the role.
Her resume spans critical roles across the state and the region. She worked as an additional district and sessions judge in both Aizawl and Lunglei. From April 2021 through July 2024, she acted as registrar of the Gauhati High Court and secretary of the Mizoram government Law and Judicial Department. She most recently served as government advocate-cum-additional public prosecutor at the Aizawl Bench. Regarding the significance of the career milestone, officials noted, "Her appointment is significant for Mizoram, which has had limited representation of its judicial officers in the higher judiciary." Dawngliani resides in Aizawl with her husband, Haulianthanga, who also practices as an advocate.
