Aizawl: Police arrested five suspects in Mizoram's Mamit district on August 20. They tried to move 45 pigs infected with African Swine Fever from Assam toward Aizawl. The group dodged a veterinary check post at Zawlnuam on the state border. Officers caught the group at Zamuang village.

Veterinary doctors ran random tests on the livestock. The results confirmed the animals carried African Swine Fever, a highly contagious disease. Officials culled all 45 pigs to stop the spread. An official of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department said, "The animals were subsequently culled in accordance with the law."

The state registered a case against the five suspects. They must face a district court on September 8.
