Kohima: African Swine Fever has arrived in Kohima. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem confirmed the outbreak at Rütsie, P Khel, and Mezoma village following lab tests from the Chief Veterinary Officer. Authorities moved fast to contain the virus. They set a 1 km radius as an Infected Zone and a 10 km radius as a Surveillance Zone.
The government slammed a total ban on the trade and transport of live pigs and pork products within these zones. Every butcher shop and meat market in the area must close its doors. The official notice states: "Any person violating the notified directives will be liable for prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other relevant provisions of the law."
Farmers must now lock down their sites. Stop all visitors. Clean your pens. Report any sick animals to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services right away. Do not dump dead pigs in the water or leave them in the open. Dispose of carcasses through safe burial protocols only. Keep a close eye on your stock. Avoid buying pork from sketchy, unknown sources.
