Kohima: African Swine Fever has hit Kohima. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem confirmed the outbreak at Rütsie, P. Khel, and Mezoma village on July 30. Lab results from the Chief Veterinary Officer triggered an immediate district-wide response.
The administration declared a 1-kilometer radius around the infected sites as an Infected Zone. A 10-kilometer radius now serves as a Surveillance Zone. Officials immediately banned the import, export, and movement of live pigs and pork products within these boundaries.
All pork markets and butcher shops must shut down. "Any person violating the notified directives will be liable for prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other relevant provisions of the law," the official notification stated.
Farmers must keep visitors away. Regularly disinfect your pens. Report any sick or dead animals to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services right away. Proper burial is the only way to handle carcasses. Dumping remains in water or out in the open is strictly illegal. The public should stay alert and avoid meat from unknown sources.
