Kohima Bans Pig Trade Following African Swine Fever Outbreak

Kohima: African Swine Fever has hit Kohima. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem declared emergency containment measures on July 16 after veterinary reports confirmed outbreaks at Peducha Village, Phezoucha L. Khel, P. Khel of Kohima Village, and the Razha area near the Dzü-ü River on NH-29. Officials established a 1-km radius as an Infected Zone and a 10-km radius as a Surveillance Zone.

The administration banned the import, export, and transport of live pigs and pork products within these areas. All butcher shops and meat markets must shutter. "All pork meat markets and butchery shops within the designated zones have also been ordered to remain closed until further notice."

Farmers must disinfect their sites. Visitors are banned from farms. Any pig death requires immediate reporting to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. Carcasses must be buried safely rather than dumped in rivers or open spaces. Public officials warned against buying meat from unverified sources. Breaking these rules invites legal penalties under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009. The orders are active now.
