Wokha Pork Supplies Clear of African Swine Fever Following Inspections

Kohima: Wokha officials found no African Swine Fever during a mass surveillance sweep on July 15. The drive covered Wokha town, Wokha Village, and Vankhosung. A joint team executed the operation under orders from the Deputy Commissioner. The squad included officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, the district administration, the police, and the Wokha Town Council.

Chief Veterinary Officer K N Zubemo Humtsoe led the mission alongside EAC Wokha Thepfuzakie Sanchu. They checked nine stockyards and 18 butcher shops. The team performed ante-mortem exams on 52 live pigs. They tested six pigs with rapid detection kits and gathered 24 tissue samples. Every single test returned negative results. Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr Yanben M Kikon also verified meat health certificates and animal transport documents at the various outlets.

The authorities warned that the negative results do not mean the area is entirely clear of the disease. They intend to maintain regular checks to protect local livestock and farmer incomes. The team urged traders to follow strict protocols. They said, "Pigs should be sourced only from ASF-free farms and zones with valid veterinary certification." Officials also promised more surprise inspections to keep public health and meat safety standards high.
