Kohima: African Swine Fever is ravaging pig farms across Zunheboto. First spotted in early July, the virus now hits multiple areas throughout the district. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Marlan Sumi confirmed the spread. It kills livestock and drains local bank accounts. Dr. Sumi said, "The Disease has affected several areas across the district, resulting in pig mortalities and causing significant economic losses to farmers who depend on pig rearing as a major source of livelihood."
This virus hits both domestic and wild pigs hard. There is no cure. No vaccine exists. Officials demand better biosecurity. Farmers must stop moving animals into farms. Clean your gear. Kill the germs. Stop feeding pigs raw food waste. Though the virus does not jump to humans, do not eat infected meat. Keep it out of the food chain. The long term risk of viral mutation remains a concern.
The District Veterinary Hospital is fighting back with a new insurance scheme. Advisor for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Kazheto Kinimi is backing the program. It aims to cover 1,000 animals. Cattle insurance is free. Compensation hits Rs 60,000 for a dead animal. Pig insurance is currently on hold due to the outbreak. Once the virus clears, owners can insure pigs aged 4 to 36 months for Rs 25,000. The owner contribution will be Rs 187.50.
Sheep, goats, poultry, and buffalo also qualify. Sheep and goats get Rs 6,000 coverage for Rs 45. Poultry layers need 1,000 birds minimum for Rs 400 coverage at Rs 3 per bird. Heifers receive Rs 40,000 coverage for Rs 300. Milch cattle, mithun, and buffaloes get Rs 60,000 coverage for Rs 450. The government covers 85 percent of the premium. Owners pay the remaining 15 percent.
