Kohima: The Self-Employed Women’s Association Nagaland and the North East Network joined forces on October 27 to host a Farmers Market-cum-Home-Based Workers Sales Day. The event took place at the Bamboo Market in Kohima. Eleven separate SEWA units showed up to display their goods. They sold organic vegetables, pickles, homemade food, traditional delicacies, and various crafts.

The day provided a direct path to consumers for local makers. Organizers wanted to cut out the intermediaries. This gives producers a chance to keep more money. The event shed light on the often hidden labor of home-based workers who handle food processing, weaving, embroidery, and indigenous crafts. These workers struggle with low pay and limited market access. The program intends to fix that. SEWA stated the event sought to provide a platform for home-based workers to showcase their products, connect with consumers and gain recognition for their skills.

Beyond immediate sales, the initiative targets the preservation of traditional knowledge. Organizers pointed out that farming, seed saving, and weaving are vital to the cultural heritage of Nagaland. They pushed for more respect for agricultural labor, demanding fair prices and better support for farmers. Local food production keeps the community fed and protects the environment. The groups hope this market builds a more self-reliant and equitable society through local entrepreneurship. Consumers were urged to buy local goods to honor the hard work put into every product.
