NEISSR Trains Social Work Students in Mental Health Counselling

Kohima: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research held a practical training session on effective counselling at BAM Hall on October 27. Students practiced ten simulations to better address the complex emotional, psychological, and social struggles facing today’s youth.

NG Christina Elizabeth, a project coordinator at Peace Channel, led the training. She walked students through the core mechanics of the job: empathy, active listening, trust-building, confidentiality, non-judgmental communication, and ethical practice. NEISSR Principal Dr Fr C P Anto pushed for the program to sharpen the skills of Master of Social Work students. He stated, "The programme highlighted the importance of mental health and well-being and the role of social casework and counselling in helping young people overcome challenges, recognise their strengths and realise their potential."

Students paired up to alternate between the roles of counsellor and client. They tackled a wide range of real-world scenarios. The sessions covered drug addiction, alcohol misuse, suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, and relationship difficulties. The training also touched on low self-esteem, friendship conflicts, poor time management, and excessive social media use. They finished by working through family pressure, career confusion, and examination anxiety.

These exercises gave students hands-on experience in empathetic communication, problem-solving, and spotting risks. It also taught them when to make appropriate referrals. The day ended with student reflections that confirmed the necessity of maintaining sensitive and client-centred care in professional practice.
