Kohima: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research in Chümoukedima held its 7th National Social Work Week from August 15 to 22. Staff and students explored the theme Social Work: Strengthening Minds, Strengthening Families. The event kicked off with Independence Day celebrations led by the Students Council for Social Change and the National Service Scheme.
Dr. Fr. C. P. Anto, the principal, addressed the crowd. He pushed students to be "professionals with competence, citizens with conscience and leaders with compassion." He emphasized the duty of social workers to fight poverty, violence, and addiction.
Assistant Professor Daislinung Sebastian Kamsuan spoke on youth power. He urged students to push for progress through innovation and education. Later, BSW V students utilized Instagram reels to push mental health awareness. The Red Ribbon Club hosted a poster contest on HIV stigma. Lomathong K took first place, with Suliri C. Sangtam and Langoi trailing behind.
Students also debated the digital divide. They looked at how smartphones change family dynamics and emotional interaction. The Media Club followed this with a digital campaign on Instagram and Facebook titled Talk It Out. It encouraged people to seek mental health support without shame.
Final events on August 22 featured debates and essays. Melda and Khekavi Zhimo won top debate honors. Chiichinu, Supou, and Khruzotalu Lohe claimed top spots in the essay contest. The Red Ribbon Club and NSS Unit sponsored the prizes for the entire week.
