Kohima: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research started a five-day induction program for incoming Master of Social Work students this Tuesday in Chümoukedima. Hosted at BAM Hall, the STAR program runs through August 1. It focuses on academic readiness, leadership, and professional ethics.
Vice Principal Fr G.L. Khing opened the session by telling students to pursue growth with confidence. He called learning a lifelong process and urged the cohort to build strong friendships. The curriculum uses simulation training, interactive sessions, and group exercises to help students adapt to postgraduate life.
Keynote speaker Dr. Toli H. Kiba outlined major national issues like poverty, climate change, and caste discrimination. She noted that while social work is a licensed profession abroad, it still lacks that formal status in India. She stressed that the field requires a mix of empathy and scientific rigor to tackle systemic inequality.
Dr. Kiba challenged the students to act as advocates for those on the margins. She reminded the room that the work requires a mix of compassion and technical skill. Citing a global icon, she noted, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
Asela Sangtam chaired the opening ceremony. Zipise Sangtam provided a musical performance. The institute stated the event aims to build professionals dedicated to social justice and human service.
