Kohima: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research handed out 97 degrees to graduates from its Bachelor and Master of Social Work programs on Saturday. The 11th Graduation-cum-Foundation Day 2026 occurred at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall located at the Peace Centre, 7th Mile, Chümoukedima.
V Lovitoly Sema, the Additional Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, attended as the chief guest. She told the crowd that social work requires a deep commitment to compassion and justice. "Social work is not merely a profession but a commitment to people, compassion, justice and social responsibility," Sema stated. She highlighted regional issues like substance abuse, mental health, and displacement as areas needing immediate professional attention.
Most Rev Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima and Chairman of NEISSR, served as the special guest. He challenged the students to act as messengers of peace and to build bridges within their communities. Principal Fr Dr CP Anto emphasized the school philosophy of Head, Heart and Hand. He noted that NEISSR alumni now work in international bodies, government agencies, and social entrepreneurship ventures.
The event featured a presentation titled Glimpses of NEISSR alongside a cultural performance called Echoes of Heritage: Melodies of NEISSR. Students Bovitoli D Zhimo and Awakhing Rengma spoke for the graduating class, while Th Jacob Khongsai received the Best Student Award. Dr Abel Ariina led the felicitation, and Rev Fr G L Khing provided the final vote of thanks. According to the school, 40 students have passed the National Eligibility Test over the last two years.
