Kohima: Master of Social Work students at the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research in Chümoukedima spent November 4 learning the ropes of the non-profit sector. The school hosted a bootcamp called Build Your NGO: Bootcamp To Start an NGO from Scratch at the BAM Hall.
Jiji Joseph, a senior programme officer at the Development Association of Nagaland, led the session. He covered the nuts and bolts of starting a firm, registration requirements, internal governance, and long-term sustainability. Joseph explained the legal paths for founders in India, specifically societies, trusts, and Section 8 companies. He warned that, "accountability, effective management and organisational sustainability" remain the bedrock of any successful operation.
Students broke into seven teams for a hands-on exercise. Each group picked a social issue and drafted a plan for an NGO, including their specific vision, mission, goals, and target populations. The workshop fits into the institute's broader push to promote social entrepreneurship. The school wants its future practitioners to master the skills needed for community-led development.
