Kohima: Mount Mary College and Higher Secondary School psychology students visited El Shaddai Children Home and Shalom Rehabilitation Centre in Chümoukedima on October 10. The trip operated under the theme Lived Experiences, Heard Real Voices and Real Changes to push for better mental health awareness.
Staff at the children home hosted a mental health session and interactive games. Students helped the kids talk through their feelings and learn why seeking support matters. The college stated the day provided a friendly and supportive environment for communication and participation.
The group moved to the Shalom Rehabilitation Centre for a briefing on the facility's mission and history. Residents spoke candidly about their battles with addiction and their paths to sobriety. These sessions emphasized the need for steady emotional support and long-term recovery efforts. The college noted that these interactions reinforced the importance of empathy, saying, "The interactions also reinforced the importance of empathy, compassion and creating supportive spaces where individuals feel heard and understood."
The department aimed to connect classroom theory with real-world practice. Students walked away with a clearer picture of how to support those in recovery. It was a bridge between books and human experience.
