Hills Farmers Union Clears Byrnihat Police of Extortion Claims

Shillong: The Hills Farmers Union (HFU) shut down rumors of illegal toll collection at the Byrnihat police station on Monday. The group met with local transporters at the Dorbar Hall in Sajer, Ri Bhoi, to clear the air. They rely on official police findings that show no evidence of extortion at the site.

HFU general secretary Alfonbirth Kharsyntiew stated, "No money can be collected without proper authorization from the state government and the Veterinary Department." Police are merely checking vehicles for legal violations. They are not shaking down drivers for cash.

The HFU previously flagged these concerns to the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, the Veterinary Department, and the state government. They now want the state to install formal checkpoints and quarantine stations. These sites are needed to stop the spread of African Swine Fever. The virus has devastated the state piggery sector.
