Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed on September 15 that Rapido captains are operating illegally in Meghalaya. The state has already ordered the platform to stop, but enforcement is difficult. Online services evade bans through VPNs or remote servers. Sangma admits strict bans fail without alternatives. He is now pushing the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Society to provide a legal, safer app-based service. "Technically, it’s illegal," Sangma said.
Meanwhile, the Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong in South West Khasi Hills is demanding a ban on imported pigs. African Swine Fever is killing livestock across the region. Advisor Wallambok Syiemiong claims traders are exploiting the crisis. They buy sick pigs for as little as 1,000 rupees and sell the meat at standard market rates. Healthy pigs fetch up to 30,000 rupees. The group wants local pork sales restricted to individual villages to stop the spread. They also demand testing centers for all incoming livestock.
Crime continues to hit the capital. A Royal Enfield Hunter was stolen from Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah, at 4:00 am on September 11. Owner Metipwanmi Passah filed an FIR at the local police station. The bike vanished near the Nongrimmaw Community Hall. Passah claims recent thefts in the area include a van tyre and a sound system. Police now have CCTV footage of the bike theft. Locals hope this evidence will lead to an arrest.
