Shillong: VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit lashed out at the government for cutting the Opposition out of the legislature. He claims the ruling party hogged 70 percent of the business during the recent Autumn Session. The Opposition was left with a meager 30 percent. Basaiawmoit spoke to reporters in Shillong on Tuesday.
The five-day session ran from August 24 to August 28. It logged just 19 hours and 23 minutes of actual work time. Basaiawmoit argued this window was far too short to tackle pressing public concerns. He noted that matters involving the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and struggles faced by cattle, pig, and vegetable farmers went ignored.
The VPP leader explained that the party turned to social media to broadcast these ignored topics. "The Opposition gets only 30 per cent while 70 per cent goes to the ruling side," Basaiawmoit stated. He believes extended sessions could head off public protests and agitation by providing a space for meaningful debate. Basaiawmoit insisted that the Opposition exists to represent the people, not just to attack the ruling side.
