Shillong: A Nongstoin court ordered 22-year-old Koldingstar Thongni into police custody for six days. He faces murder charges in the death of 60-year-old Elbin Kharbani. West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert Kharkongor confirmed the remand on Sunday following Thongni's arrest at Khlieh Iew Nongstoin. A joint task force of local police and the Village People’s Development Council for Non-Affiliation captured the suspect.
The attack unfolded at 2 am on July 31 at the residence of Kharbani and his wife, Seldaris Kharsyntiew. Thongni allegedly cut the power to the home before slipping inside to attack the couple in their beds. Kharbani died from his injuries. Kharsyntiew survived the assault and remains under medical care at NEIGRIHMS.
Thongni allegedly abducted his partner, Kharbani’s daughter, and dragged her into a forested area in Syllei-Iawkhein village. She escaped at 3 pm that same day while he slept, eventually making it home. Investigators believe a dispute over the couple’s relationship fueled the violence. Police have since recovered the weapon and other evidence.
Nongstoin Police registered the case under Sections 103, 109, 118, and 140 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Kur Kharsyntiew central body denounced the crime, calling it an act of extreme barbarity. General secretary Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew led a delegation to support the family, stating the group wants to show "solidarity with the bereaved family."
