Shillong: Hundreds marched through Jakrem on Monday to demand justice for 76-year-old Joit Kharlyngdoh. The mentally challenged woman was found dead in the Krem Motbih Pamske forest on July 20, 2026. Locals searching for wild mushrooms located her body 13 kilometers from Mawkyrwat, 16 days after she went missing.
Led by Myntri Pascal Wahlang, the crowd moved from Mawleiñ-Mawrangkynda Market to Madan Pyndenkseh. Demonstrators carried signs and shouted slogans against the killer. The rally served as a show of solidarity for the victim’s grieving family. Participants pushed for a swift police investigation and strict legal action against the culprit to stop future violence.
Addressing the crowd, Wahlang called for social stability. "Continue fostering cooperation, unity and tolerance to maintain peace and order in the village and to eradicate acts that could disrupt society," he stated. While the village remains on edge, Superintendent of Police B. Jyrwa confirmed that the case remains active. Officials have yet to identify a suspect or report a breakthrough in the investigation.
