Shillong: Villagers in Pyndenumsaw warned authorities on Tuesday that they cannot hold back a public backlash if a 62-year-old murder suspect gets bail. Bailing Wahlang stands accused of the brutal killing of his 56-year-old sister, Snity Wahlang. The village council, the Dorbar Shnong, issued the ultimatum during a peace rally in South West Khasi Hills. Hundreds of residents and students marched from Madan Dommawlein to condemn the violence.
Anderson Syiemlieh, a member of the village executive committee, said the community lives in fear. Local youth and elders caught Bailing Wahlang in Rohbah village after a night-long manhunt. They handed him to police to prevent immediate vigilante justice. Syiemlieh noted that the accused shows no remorse and continues to intimidate the community from behind bars.
“If I am released from here, we will see,” the suspect reportedly told residents while at the police station. Syiemlieh warned that if the authorities release him, the people will take the law into their own hands. The Dorbar Shnong and the Khasi Students’ Union demand life imprisonment for the accused due to his history of domestic volatility and the inhumane nature of the crime.
Plosbor Kharjahrin of the KSU urged police to speed up the chargesheet. He stated that the accused poses a clear threat to public safety. The village council insists they have followed the law, but now the judiciary must keep the suspect imprisoned to maintain order.
