Police Recreate Guwahati Murder Scene at Suspect’s Flat

Guwahati: Guwahati police returned to the Anjali Griha apartment in Beltola on September 9 to piece together a brutal murder. Ramanuj Goswami, a cab driver currently held in seven-day police custody, walked through the scene in handcuffs. Investigators brought him to the flat to verify his account of how he killed his wife, 25-year-old Riya Talukdar Goswami.

Goswami allegedly used a machete, known locally as a dao, to kill his wife after a heated argument. He then decapitated her, wrapped the head in a polythene bag, and shoved it inside a refrigerator. Police recovered the dao and the refrigerator, sending the appliance for forensic analysis. They are also probing claims that he severed his wife's fingers during the attack.

The couple married on September 22 last year. Riya worked at a boutique in Fancy Bazaar and reportedly told a colleague about frequent fights with her husband. Records show Goswami spent three months in a drug rehabilitation center before the wedding. Goswami surrendered to Dispur Police on Sunday following the killing.

Evidence remains thin on the motive. Goswami claims he suspected his wife of an extramarital affair. Investigators are currently verifying this claim. A colleague noted that Riya was supported by her elder brother. One associate stated she had spoken about frequent arguments with her husband. The investigation into the couple's final days continues.
