Shillong: A 50-year-old man lies dead. Nobartis Sohphoh, a resident of Mawsdei village, was discovered Wednesday morning at Umjarain Market in South West Khasi Hills. A passerby spotted the body at 7:30 am about 17 km from Mawkyrwat. The witness initially thought the man was unconscious due to his known struggle with alcohol addiction.
Sohphoh suffered severe head wounds. Locals believe he was struck by a sharp weapon. The scene showed no signs of a struggle, prompting residents to suspect that the man was killed elsewhere on Tuesday night before his body was dumped at the market site.
Police arrived quickly to conduct an inquest. They sent the remains to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have told the family to file a written complaint to officially register an unnatural death case and start a formal investigation. Police officials note that the cause of death remains unconfirmed: "Police officials, however, maintained that the cause of death cannot be confirmed as a homicide until the autopsy report is available."
