Guwahati: Jonmoni Gogoi surrendered to Dhemaji Police. She had been on the run since the October 26 shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati. Five people died that night. The tragedy unfolded in the city's Ulubari area.
Investigators were hunting for Jonmoni, the couple's children, and a cab driver. They now plan to grill her to map out the events before and after the murders. The victims were hotel co-owners Helena Bharali and her brother Bhudev Bharali, Helena's son Debarshi, daughter-in-law Rinika, and caretaker Narayan Das.
Ghanakanta Gogoi remains in a seven-day police remand. A Special Investigation Team is questioning him daily at Latasil Police Station. He signed a five-year lease for the hotel in September 2025. Detectives suspect a bitter financial dispute triggered the violence. During his interrogation, Gogoi claimed he acted in self-defence, stating he "opened fire in self-defence."
The Chief Judicial Magistrate court stepped in to monitor his safety. The court forbids custodial torture. Officers must ensure Gogoi receives a medical exam every 24 hours. If police take him out for evidence recovery between sunset and sunrise, a Deputy Superintendent of Police must be present. He gets clean water and food. The SIT continues to work the case.
