DNA Evidence Closes Williamnagar Murder Case

Shillong: East Garo Hills police finished their investigation into a 2025 murder. DNA profiling confirms the suspect, James R. Sangma, is dead. He allegedly hacked a woman to death with a machete in Samgong village on July 18, 2025. He fled immediately. Police started a massive manhunt.

Officers found a body in Dawa Matchakolgre on July 29, 2025. It was highly decomposed. Family members identified the remains using clothing, a rosary, and a mobile phone found in the pockets. East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Swapnil Pawar confirmed the recovery, stating, "During a search and examination of the body, a mobile phone and a rosary were recovered from the pocket of the deceased’s trousers, which were subsequently identified by the family members as belonging to him."

Investigators sent biological samples from the body and blood from Sangma's siblings to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. The results confirmed a biological match. This evidence closed the file on Williamnagar Women Police Station Case No. 13/2025, filed under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Sangma also faced charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Police filed their final report with the court. They handled the case with professional, scientific methods. The public should avoid spreading rumors. The case remains sub-judice.
