Guwahati: Nimananda Das died in a car crash early Sunday morning. The 55-year-old writer, cine-journalist, and filmmaker was driving alone near Bhakat Chapori in Majuli when he lost control. His vehicle plunged into a deep ditch around 2:00 a.m. Das was returning to his camp at Poduimoni Gaon after dropping off crew members and camera gear at the Gogamukh railway station.
Das was in the region to direct his debut film, Rumayung. The project chronicles the life of Jadav Payeng, the Forest Man of India and a Padma Shri awardee. Actor Rajib Kro confirmed filming had wrapped up just one day before the tragedy. The team expected to travel to Guwahati on Monday morning.
Kro said, "We had planned to return together today. However, some equipment needed to be delivered to Guwahati urgently. Das went to drop the crew members and the equipment at the station, and the accident took place on his way back to Majuli."
Beyond his film work, Das was a well-known cultural activist, critic, and contributor to several publications. He previously worked as an assistant director on films like Ase Ne Kono Ba Hiyat and Soru Bowari under director Baharul Islam. He also wrote screenplays for and directed various television serials. Family members reside in Batguri-Buddhabasi in the Srijangram area of Bongaigaon district. Das leaves behind his mother, wife, son, and daughter. Authorities are currently holding his remains at a local hospital in Majuli for a post-mortem examination. His family expects his body to arrive home on Monday, August 31.
